AC Air Filters
If you are currently operating your AC unit without an air filter, there is nothing stopping dust, dirt and debris from clogging the evaporator coil of your air handler. This greatly diminishes the lifespan of your AC unit and reduces the system’s ability to remove heat from your home. Having and using an air filter correctly is the easiest and most cost effective way to keep your AC unit in good working order.
First, it is important to realize that air takes the path of least resistance, so using an air filter that is correctly sized is paramount. If there are any gaps or spaces on the sides of the filter, you might as well not be using a filter at all! Many AC units require a standard sized air filter that you can find at your local supply store. However, your AC unit may need a custom sized air filter for a snug fit. You won’t find these custom filters at your local store.
Neighbors A/C can measure your correct filter size and have any custom sized filter ready within 3-5 business days. If you prefer, there are two ways that you can confirm your filter size without us coming out to your home, all you need is a tape measure. If you currently have a filter in your unit, take it out and measure the dimensions of your filter. If you don’t have a filter to measure, slide the tape measure into the filter cavity until it hits the back of the cavity, this is your filter length. Then measure how wide the opening is to get your filter width. It’s as easy as that!
When purchasing a residential air filter, it is essential to take note of the filter’s MERV rating, which stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. This rating measures the effectiveness of a filter in capturing particles from the air. Remember, an air filter keeps your indoor air clean by removing pollen, dust, fibers, bacteria, animal dander and more. The higher your filter’s MERV rating, the denser the filter meshing and the better it is at removing these particles from your air.
Neighbors A/C recommends a MERV rating between 8 and 11 for residential homes. A MERV rating higher than 11 will restrict the air itself from passing through the filter, putting a strain on your system and decreasing air flow. Filters with ratings lower than 7 will not capture enough particles, giving you a poorer indoor air quality. A good rule of thumb is if you can see through it, anything will pass through it!
You should change your air filter once every 2 months or more often if needed. If not, the dirty filter will act as a clog to your air flow which can cause the evaporator coil to freeze up. Yikes!
